"I’ve spent many hours painting on the beach at Smelt Bay. Looking west, you can see Quadra Island in the background, and more often than not, a sailboat will pass by. I had to stand on planks to avoid sinking into the sand while I painted. One day, a local man happened to pass by. I told him, 'I’ve been painting this scene all day, and I just realized this rock is twice as tall as I am.' His response: 'This rock has a lot to teach us.'"
